CENSUS & REDISTRICTING FOCUS GROUP FOR ENVIRONMENTAL FUNDER FOCUS

CENSUS & REDISTRICTING FOCUS GROUP FOR ENVIRONMENTAL FUNDER FOCUS

A program of CBFN’s Civic Engagement Ad-Hoc Group, Census Equity Initiative, Fair Representation in Redistricting, and Fair Count

May 2, 2024 | 1PM - 2:15PM | Virtual

CBFN invites you to join the Census Equity Initiative, Fair Representation in Redistricting, and Fair Count to hold a focus group for environmental funders!

The Census Equity Initiative and Fair Representation in Redistricting funder collaboratives are working with Fair Count to gather information on how and why the environmental funder community engages with these core civic participation activities. Fair Count is developing draft materials for environmental funders and this discussion group will provide an opportunity to learn about what type of information is most helpful on these critical issues for funders. The discussion will also create space for funders to discuss amongst themselves why they care about these issues.

If you are interested in joining this virtual focus group, please reach out to Megan, CBFN’s Director (megan@chesbayfunders.org) for the Zoom link.

The Census Equity Initiative (CEI) is a national and regional funder collaborative dedicated to ensuring that census data is high quality and fairly counts populations at risk of being miscounted. Established in 2015, CEI believes the census is a core building block for equitable access to democratic participation and the fair allocation of resources. When people of color, young children, lower-income people and other populations are missed in the American Community Survey or the decennial census, it distorts our democracy and undermines our ability to diagnose problems, develop solutions and distribute effective services. The CEI has four major strands of work: (a) Address census policy and operations, (b) Support research that helps promote a fair and accurate census; (c) Sustain collaboration and aligned action; and (d) Get Out the Count planning.

Fair Representation in Redistricting (FRR) is a funder collaborative established to support communities of color and other underrepresented people to engage fully and fairly in redistricting processes, creating maps that accurately represent their communities. FRR works to: (1) secure fairer district maps; (2) advance policies that will make future redistricting processes more transparent and inclusive and that will prioritize keeping communities of interest together; and (3) continue building power and infrastructure in communities of color so that their leadership informs not just redistricting efforts, but other civic engagement work such as voter engagement and census equity.
